MONTGOMERY, Ala. (October 30, 2025) - As the nation faces the potential impact of a federal government shutdown, the River Region United Way is reminding local families that help is available for those who may lose access to essential benefits such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).
“We anticipate that SNAP benefits could be cut off in the next few days, affecting thousands of people in our community,” said Jannah Bailey, President and CEO of River Region United Way. “About 46 percent of our neighbors rely on SNAP benefits to help their families put food on the table. These are working families, single moms and dads, and those caring for elderly or disabled loved ones.”
The River Region United Way serves people in Autauga, Elmore, Montgomery, Lowndes, and Macon counties. RRUW stands ready to connect residents to available community resources through 211, a free and confidential helpline. By dialing 2-1-1, individuals can receive referrals for food, housing, and other essential needs during the shutdown.
“If you need assistance, please call 211, and you will be given some referrals that will help you throughout this crisis,” Bailey said. “Thank you, and God bless you all.”
Additional community resources for those facing hardship due to the government shutdown can be found on the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce’s Military-Government Shutdown Assistance page.
